Fight Music – Let Them Eat Cock

It’s hard to know what to say about a record when the band itself provides a succinct enough characterization of its own music in the liner notes. “What happens when a welder, power plant operator, and social worker decide to play in a band together?” they ask themselves. They snarkily answer, “A mediocre punk band that loves to suck loudly.” Mediocre? Perhaps. But local group Fight Music certainly does not suck on their 5th full-length CD, Let Them Eat Cock.

That’s because this anarchic group of pissed off worker bees puts on a hell of a performance. Opener “Drink, Smoke, Fuck, Destroy” lives up to its title with a propulsive bass line, and tracks like “Pundits and Patriots” and “Putting the Cock in Caucasian” recall Rancid at their most savage, with rollicking stop-and-go riffs. “Matador For President” even disrupts the workman-like break-neck uniformity with a little ska breakdown before the final two songs dive back into the pit for another go. And before you know it, the set is over—Fight Music certainly don’t overstay their welcome, covering 14 songs in a scant 30 minutes.

Let Them Eat Cock is an easy record to recommend for those who like cheeky, solid hardcore punk, but it’s clear that Fight Music could care less if anyone likes what they do anyway. Therein lies the appeal, I suppose! Punk was always meant to be made in spite of its audience, and Fight Music applies this ethic most effectively.
